Travel Marketing Built Around Seasons, Destinations and Direct Bookings

Axoria is a travel marketing agency for tour operators, hotels and hotel groups, online travel agencies and travel content publishers. We build demand for destinations before the booking window opens, compete on metasearch and paid search when it does, and improve the booking funnel so more of that demand converts directly.

Why travel acquisition is a different game

Travel demand is seasonal, price-sensitive and intermediated. A family researching a summer holiday might start in January, compare dozens of options across OTAs, metasearch and review sites over several weeks, and book in March. A travel marketing agency has to be present across that whole window, in the right markets, at a cost that survives thin margins and the commission a booking platform would otherwise take.

The intermediaries are the defining feature. Booking.com, Expedia and Google’s own hotel and flight products dominate paid and organic results for commercial queries, and they will happily bid on your brand name. Hotels and operators that rely on them pay 15–25% commission on bookings they may have won anyway. Building a direct channel means competing where you can (brand, destination content, metasearch, loyalty) and accepting distribution where you cannot.

Seasonality complicates everything. Budgets that are flat across the year overspend in dead months and under-serve peak booking windows. Smart Bidding needs conversion volume to learn, which it will not get in the off-season. And organic content for a destination has to be ranking months before the booking season, because the research phase begins long before the purchase.

Where travel brands find growth

  • Destination and experience content. “Best time to visit Sicily”, “Kyoto itinerary 5 days” and “things to do in Lisbon with kids” capture travellers in the research phase, before they have chosen who to book with. Operators and hotels with genuine on-the-ground knowledge can win these terms and route readers to relevant products.
  • Metasearch. Google Hotel Ads, Tripadvisor and Trivago show your direct rate next to the OTAs at the moment of comparison. With rate parity and a connected booking engine, hotels can win direct bookings at a lower effective cost than OTA commission.
  • Brand defence and long-tail paid search. Protecting brand terms from OTA bidding is cheap and high-return. Beyond that, long-tail product terms (“small group tour Vietnam 10 days”) convert well while head terms are usually unaffordable.
  • International markets. Many operators sell to travellers from several countries but have one English site. A properly built international SEO structure with hreflang, localised content and market-specific pricing opens demand that the current site cannot capture.
  • Booking funnel conversion. Availability search, date selection, room or package configuration and payment are where travel sites lose most visitors. Improvements to trust, price transparency and mobile flow lift results across every channel.
  • Travel affiliates and content partners. For OTAs and larger operators, publishers, bloggers and niche travel sites paid on commission can add incremental bookings, particularly in destination niches.

How Axoria approaches travel marketing

Plan against the booking curve, not the calendar

We start by mapping when your customers research, book and travel for each product line and source market. A ski operator and a city-break hotel have completely different curves. Content is scheduled to be indexed and ranking before the research phase starts; paid budgets are weighted to the booking window; retargeting windows are set to match how long people deliberate. Bid strategies are managed through the off-season so they do not lose learning, often by consolidating campaigns or using portfolio strategies.

Build destination authority you can convert

For a tour operator with 60 itineraries across 12 countries, we build a destination hub for each country, guide content beneath it written with your product team’s local knowledge, and clear internal links from every guide to the relevant tours. Product pages get structured data, real departure dates and transparent pricing so they are eligible for rich results. This is the approach described in our SEO guide, applied to the research-heavy way people plan travel.

Compete with OTAs where it is winnable

We do not try to outbid booking platforms on generic terms. Instead we protect brand search, run metasearch with a direct-booking advantage (a member rate, a free breakfast, flexible cancellation), and target long-tail terms where the OTA landing page is weak. Google Hotel Ads and other metasearch channels are run on commission or CPC models depending on which produces a lower cost per direct booking, and we test both. Our PPC guide covers how we structure and evaluate paid search.

Open new source markets carefully

International expansion works when there is enough demand and the site can genuinely serve the market: local language, local currency, local payment methods and localised content rather than a translated homepage. We assess markets by search demand and booking data, choose the URL structure (usually subfolders), implement hreflang correctly and localise content in priority order. Our international SEO service covers this in depth.

What to expect on timing

Travel SEO pays off one season later than the work is done. Content built in autumn ranks for spring research and converts for summer travel. We set expectations around that lag and use paid search, metasearch and CRO to produce results in the meantime.

How we measure travel marketing

Direct bookings and direct shareBookings and revenue through your own site versus OTAs and other intermediaries, tracked over time.
Cost per booking net of cancellationsMedia cost against confirmed, non-cancelled bookings by channel, since travel cancellation rates are material.
Booking funnel conversionSearch-to-booking rate by step and device, segmented by source market and product line.
Destination content performanceOrganic traffic, assisted bookings and internal click-through from guides to product pages, by destination.
Metasearch efficiencyCost per direct booking on Google Hotel Ads and other metasearch channels compared with OTA commission on the same room nights.
Market-level performanceVisibility, traffic and bookings by country and language once international pages are live.

Tracking has to handle long lead times, multi-currency revenue and booking modifications, so analytics setup is typically the first phase of an engagement.

Common travel marketing mistakes

  • Flat annual budgets. Spending the same in a dead month as in the peak booking window wastes budget in one and starves the other.
  • Publishing destination content too late. A guide that goes live in June for summer travel has missed the research phase by months.
  • Ignoring brand bidding by OTAs. Leaving your brand term undefended hands your own customers to a platform charging 15–25% commission.
  • Translating instead of localising. A machine-translated site with GBP pricing does not convert German travellers, and duplicate content without hreflang confuses search engines.
  • Hiding fees until checkout. Late-appearing taxes, resort fees or booking charges are one of the most common causes of abandonment in travel funnels.
  • Measuring gross bookings. Cancellations and amendments are high enough in travel that gross booking metrics materially overstate performance.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Anything else, ask us directly.

What kinds of travel businesses do you work with?

Tour and activity operators, independent hotels and hotel groups, villa and holiday rental companies, online travel agencies and travel content publishers earning affiliate revenue. The plan differs by model: a hotel focuses heavily on metasearch and direct bookings, an operator on destination content and product search, a publisher on content and partner programmes.

Can you reduce our dependence on Booking.com and Expedia?

We can grow your direct channel through brand defence, metasearch, direct-booking incentives and a better booking funnel, and we report direct share over time. Removing OTAs entirely is rarely sensible; the goal is to shift the mix so you pay commission only on bookings you would not otherwise have won.

How do you handle seasonality in budgets and reporting?

We build a booking-curve model per product line and source market, weight budgets to the booking window, and compare performance year on year and against the curve rather than month on month. Off-season strategy focuses on content, technical work and testing so that campaigns and pages are ready when demand returns.

Do you set up Google Hotel Ads and other metasearch?

Yes, working with your booking engine or channel manager to connect rates and availability. We test commission-based and CPC bidding and manage rate parity issues that undermine metasearch performance.

How long does travel SEO take?

Technical and product page work can improve visibility within a few months. Destination content generally needs to be live a season ahead to capture the research phase, so the first full effect is usually seen in the following year's booking window. We use paid search, metasearch and CRO to produce results in the meantime.

How is travel marketing priced?

A monthly retainer scoped by channels, number of destinations or properties and markets, with ad spend paid directly to platforms. International SEO builds and booking-funnel CRO programmes are often scoped as projects alongside the retainer.

Can you help us sell into new countries?

Yes. We assess demand by market, recommend which to enter first, build the international site structure with hreflang and localised content, and run market-specific paid campaigns. We advise against launching markets the business cannot serve in local language, currency and customer support.
